Top 5 Travel Destinations with Hummba Audio Guides ~ Location Blog

US-based travel magazine Travel + Leisure recently released their annual World?s Best Awards, and some of our favourite travel destinations made the cut. In fact, we?re very proud to announce that we have audio and text mobile travel guides to nine of the Top 10 cities, and they?re all available for download right now in the Hummba guide store.

Bangkok:
Bangkok came in first on the list, narrowly defending its title from last year. Krung Thep, as it?s known to locals, is a popular tourist destination for travellers looking to experience Southeast Asia at a bargain. It?s not unheard of to stay in a 5-star hotel in Bangkok for the same price as a 2- or 3-star hotel in New York! There are also more than 400 temples in the city, and our Bangkok City Guide helps you navigate them with ease.

Istanbul:
Istanbul climbed up two spaces from last year to take the number three position on the Travel + Leisure list. The Turkish capital is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and holds the unique title of being the only city in the world that is found on two continents (Europe and Asia). Istanbul?s nightlife is booming and restaurants, bars and clubs are popping up all over the place. Our Istanbul City Guide has detailed information about 320 points of interest in the city, so you?ll never be left without something to do.

Cape Town:
The Mother City will always hold a special place in our hearts. It?s where Hummba?s parent company, Tourism Radio, was founded, so we might be a little biased when we say it should have featured a little bit higher in the list. At number four however, Cape Town proves that it still has what it takes to compete with the World?s Best ? thanks in part to the stunning Table Mountain, which looms over the city and offers breathtaking views from on high. There?s no shortage of things to see and do in the Mother City, and our Cape Town City Guide will point you in the right direction from the moment you arrive.

New York:
New York came in at a disappointing number seven; falling three spots since last year. Don?t let that put you off however. We firmly believe that the Big Apple remains one of those places that every traveller simply has to visit at least once in their lives ? add it to the bucket list if you haven?t already. Our New York City Guide has already proved popular with mobile travellers, and it?s certainly one of our most impressive. It features more than three hours of audio as well as hundreds of restaurants, shops, tourist attractions and accommodation facilities. If you?re on your way to New York, do yourself a favour and download the audio travel guide from the Hummba guide store.

Paris:
Coming in at number 10, is the ever-consistent Paris. The City of Lights is often called the most romantic city in the world, and we can?t help but agree. There?s so much more to do in the French Capital than just the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Download our Paris City Guide and you?ll discover some of the many hidden treasures of this beautiful place.

That being said, we better get back to work on our Kyoto City Guide. Happy travels!

XE.com - TEXT-Fitch affirms Discovery Communications at 'BBB'

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

July 31 - Fitch Ratings has affirmed Discovery Communications LLC's

(Discovery) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) and senior unsecured debt at 'BBB'. The

Rating Outlook is Stable.

Discovery's ratings are supported by the company's strong core brands, global

carriage, leverageable content, robust free cash flow and solid credit metrics.

Ratings concerns continue to center on the significant contribution of cyclical

advertising revenue, a competitive landscape of similar programming on other

cable channels, the general volatility associated with hit-driven content and

the company's dependence on the Discovery and TLC brands.

The ratings and Stable Outlook reflect the following considerations:

--Discovery retains significant financial flexibility, given solid free cash

flow, strong credit protection metrics for the ratings category, and a minimal

near-term maturity schedule. Fitch expects annual free cash flow of over $1

billion, driven by the high margins, content leveragability across markets and

geographic regions, and low capital intensity associated with the cable

programming business. Fitch estimates total leverage of 2.6 times (x) at June

30, 2012. Discovery therefore retains ample flexibility within the ratings for

share repurchases and moderate acquisition activity. Fitch expects 2012 share

repurchases to exceed the $1 billion Discovery repurchased in 2011. Debt

incurrence to fund share repurchase activity is incorporated into ratings up to

Fitch's 3.0x leverage threshold for Discovery's 'BBB' rating. Further, while

large-scale M&A activity is not anticipated given the dearth of cable network

assets available for sale, Fitch believes there is room at the 'BBB' level to

absorb some mid-sized acquisitions, underscored by Fitch's current belief that

the company would restore leverage to under 3.0x within a 12-month timeframe.

--Recurring, high margin affiliate revenue accounts for approximately half of

Discovery's overall revenue base. Fitch continues to view cable networks as the

strongest sub-sector of the media & entertainment industry predominantly due to

the carriage fees they receive from cable providers, which are recurring under

multi-year contracts with very high renewal rates and built in rate increases.

The multi-year nature of carriage contracts, historical renewal rates, ownership

of content and brand awareness give visibility to the business.

--Fitch expects renewal rates of carriage agreements with pay TV providers in

the U.S. to remain stable, given the 'must have' nature of Discovery's major

channels (namely Discovery and TLC). However, Fitch sees an increased risk that

Discovery will no longer be able to fully pass higher programming costs onto the

pay TV providers via higher affiliate fees, which could moderately pressure U.S.

margins. Pay TV providers face additional costs, a reduced ability to pass those

increases off to a mostly more vulnerable customer base, and proliferating

alternatives to traditional pay TV bundles. These operators are therefore

becoming increasingly resistant to paying higher affiliate fees. That said,

Fitch expects Discovery's programming costs to increase at a slower rate than

some of its peers, given absence of sports and a lower-cost suite of

programming. Additionally, Fitch believes that the top tier channels that can

continue to command audience share/ratings will continue to be a must-carry for

the distributors and will therefore retain leverage going forward. Any margin

pressure would be accommodated at current ratings, given the nearly 60% EBITDA

margins in the U.S. Network segment.

--The margins at Discovery's International Networks segment exceed 40%,

materially above its peers. The fact-based nature of the content enables

Discovery to generate programming aimed at a global audience, which can be

easily transferred to other regions with only minor costs. Rising global pay TV

penetration and digital conversion should drive mid- to high-single digit growth

in this segment over the intermediate term. International could be a focus of

future moderate acquisition activity. Discovery's launch of free to air channels

in select markets where pay-TV penetration is plateauing could enable the

company to generate moderate growth.

--Ratings are underpinned by the strength of the company's Discovery and TLC

brands, both of which reach nearly 100 million subscribers across the U.S. and

continue to generate solid ratings. These flagship channels are the main drivers

of the carriage and advertising revenue, and provide Discovery with significant

leverage in negotiating affiliate fees for its total portfolio. That said, the

two networks generate more than 60% of U.S. Networks revenue, and the company's

other networks do not have anywhere near the scale, audience or revenue

generating capabilities. Additionally, the genres of programming that Discovery

offers can be more easily replicated by other distribution outlets, and more

channels have stepped outside of their initial goal and overlapping with

Discovery programming. This is a mild concern, although Fitch currently believes

the downside risk on carriage revenues is not material and the downside risk on

advertising revenues is accommodated at the current ratings.

--Fitch continues to believe that over-the-top (OTT), or Internet-based,

television will not drive significant cord cutting or have a material impact on

Discovery's credit profile or free cash flow over the intermediate term. Fitch

expects Discovery to continue to sell only its already monetized older library

content to the SVOD distributors, such as Netflix and Amazon. In addition, Fitch

expects Discovery to continue to benefit from these high-margin digital sales.

That being said, Fitch does see incremental risk relative to some other original

content providers, given the easily replicable nature of Discovery's content.

--Fitch acknowledges that John Malone has an estimated 22% voting control of

Discovery (and 30% with respect to the election of common stock directors) and

has been linked to aggressive shareholder-friendly actions in the past. Fitch

believes that Mr. Malone is comfortable with the company's financial strategy

and will not be seeking a more aggressive capital structure. Additionally, Fitch

believes that Advance/Newhouse, which has approximately 25% voting control (34%

economic stake), as well as consent rights over a variety of corporate actions,

has traditionally operated on a fiscally conservative basis, further mitigating

any governance concerns.

Liquidity is solid, particularly given the absence of maturities until $850

million comes due in 2015. Liquidity at March 31 consisted of $1 billion of cash

and an undrawn $1 billion revolving credit facility (RCF) that matures in

October 2015. Liquidity is further supported by Discovery's annual free cash

flow, which Fitch expects to exceed $1 billion.

Pro forma debt at March 31, 2012 was $5.2 billion and consisted primarily of:

--$850 million of 3.7% senior unsecured notes due 2015;

--$500 million of 5.625% senior unsecured notes due 2019;

--$1.3 billion of 5.05% senior unsecured notes due 2020;

--$650 million of 4.375% senior unsecured notes due 2021;

--$500 million of 3.3% senior unsecured notes due 2022;

--$850 million of 6.35% senior unsecured notes due 2040; and

--$500 million of 4.95% senior unsecured notes due 2042.

WHAT COULD TRIGGER A RATING ACTION?

An upgrade is unlikely over the medium term, given the company's stated leverage

targets and the limited depth of brands. Future upgrades would only be

considered from the combination of the following: 1) an explicit commitment from

management and a compelling rationale for Discovery to operate at a more

conservative leverage metric and

Dissidents doubt Cuban report on fatal crash

Cuban dissidents cast fresh doubt Sunday on the Communist government's explanation of the death of a leading opposition figure Oswaldo Paya, who died last week in a car crash.

"The Cuban government has put on television (its) photos of the car (in which Paya was killed) and given a lot of explanations that leave questions unanswered," said Berta Soler, who leads the Ladies in White group which pushes for the release of political prisoners.

"So why haven't they shown a single photo of the car and the tree? Where is the tree?" asked Soler, referring to the official story that the car carrying four people, which crashed July 22 near Bayamo, in Cuba's east, slammed into a tree.

The government insists Paya, 60, a leading opponent of the one-party rule of the Cuban Communist Party, was killed when Spanish driver Angel Carromero lost control of the rental car and the vehicle struck a tree.

Suspicions remain widespread among dissidents that Cuban officials have not released all the facts.

Elizardo Sanchez, who leads the dissident information clearinghouse Cuban National Reconciliation and Human Rights Committee, has said he believes there was an accident but not necessarily what the government has said about it.

"We have seen the official report, and we are not convinced by the official report," said Sanchez.

Only the two crash survivors, Carromero and Swedish political activist Jens Aron Modig, "can say what really happened there. But their statements to Cuban police would be slanted," he charged.

Paya was the 2002 recipient of the European Parliament's prestigious Sakharov prize, which is awarded for defending human rights and freedom of thought.

His widow Ofelia Acevedo slammed officials for not allowing her to talk to the two crash survivors, who have been kept in custody since the incident.

In a lengthy report Friday, the interior ministry said that Carromero, a political activist with Spain's conservative Popular Party, lost control of the vehicle when he hit the brakes on the slippery surface of an unpaved section of road while speeding.

Paya's family, however, has said it has information that the rental car was forced off the road by another vehicle.

Acevedo said she did not believe the government's account.

Carromero faces charges of traffic violations resulting in death, which can carry up to 10 years in prison under Cuba's penal code.

Overnight ratings up for first night

(AP) ? Preliminary estimates show that Saturday night's NBC telecast scored the highest ratings for the first evening of an Olympics competition outside of the United States.

The Nielsen company said Sunday that its measurement of the nation's largest cities showed ratings for the Olympics telecast were up 8 percent over opening night in Beijing four years ago. A fuller measurement of viewership is expected later on Sunday.

NBC was the target of many Twitter complaints on Saturday for not telecasting the marquee men's swimming competition live, instead showing it on tape delay in prime-time. But prime-time ratings are the report card that the company cares about the most and, thus far, viewers are responding to the strategy.

Toronto Team Building Activities to Make Your Business Team More ...

It is very easy for an office staff to become simply satisfied. They can fall into a new routine where that they become very independent and rely on his or her fellow workers less and less. While this may seem like an excellent, many office tasks can be accomplished quicker and when the team does them as a whole rather than relying on the insight of only one person. If a business is in Toronto, team building activities from an organization like XPEERience Group might help create that ?we? perspective again.

This company focuses primarily on Keynote Speaker Canada activities in a variety of settings. Choosing the proper team building activities is important any time setting up an event like this as it is important to make certain all staff members are comfortable with the events. In fact, it would not serve a goal to alienate personnel during a team building activities as you want everyone to participate in in the events.

Among the more popular packages for Toronto team building activities may be the Ultimate Xpeerience. This deal encompasses low actual physical impact activities such as dodgeball, water balloon drop, and volleyball as well as more demanding team building events activities like the blow up obstacle course along with the outdoor rockwall. Most companies will have a pretty good concept of what their staff is capable of and can find the team building activities which will work best for their staff.

The beauty of an day out such as this is that most employees forget the reason why they are actually there in the first place. They are having so much fun, that they naturally form a greater bond with their other workers and reestablish the teamwork frame of mind that has been missing in the office. So how can all of this actually include itself back into the office?

Something that a lot of companies will do is have an employees meeting to discuss the outing the next time the entire staff is together on the job. Keep it very casual and talk about the different events and how the particular winning teams were able to perform so well. Retain stressing how they employed each person?s strengths to aid the team perform greater.

Once this topic gets rolling, start to bring up examples of jobs around the office that have been delayed because the ?team? has not been working together. Keep in mind this is not a disciplinary meeting, simply a reinforcement of how efficient it is to work together. From that point, hand out exactly the same assignment to both of these individuals and teams. Allow them to have a limited time to develop them and then carry a meeting later within the day to monitor improvement.

While there may be a lot of people capable of pulling from the upset victory, generally, the teams will be able to present a better plus much more complete project. This is where management can enhance the idea of how important it is to work together whenever possible instead of working alone all the time. It will not be long before the entire workplace benefits from the Toronto team building activities they appreciated during the outing.

UN states fail to reach global arms trade treaty

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Member states failed to reach agreement Friday on a new U.N. treaty to regulate the multibillion dollar global arms trade, and some diplomats and supporters blamed the United States for triggering the unraveling of the monthlong negotiating conference.

Hopes had been raised that agreement could be reached on a revised treaty text that closed some major loopholes by Friday's deadline for action. But the U.S. announced Friday morning that it needed more time to consider the proposed treaty ? and Russia and China then also asked for more time.

The U.N. General Assembly voted in December 2006 to work toward a treaty regulating the growing arms trade, with the U.S. casting a "no" vote. In October 2009, the Obama administration reversed the Bush administration's position and supported an assembly resolution to hold four preparatory meetings and a four-week U.N. conference in 2012 to draft an arms trade treaty.

The United States insisted that a treaty had to be approved by the consensus of all 193 U.N. member states.

Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan, the conference chairman, said treaty supporters knew "this was going to be difficult to achieve" and there were some delegations that didn't like the draft though "the overwhelming majority in the room did." He added that some countries from the beginning of negotiations had "different views" on a treaty, including Syria, Iran and North Korea.

Despite the failure to reach agreement, Moritan predicted that "we certainly are going to have a treaty in 2012."

He said there are several options for moving forward in the General Assembly which will be considered over the summer, before the world body's new session begins in September.

The estimated $60 billion international arms trade is unregulated, though the U.S. and other countries have their own rules on exports.

The powerful National Rifle Association in the U.S. has portrayed the treaty as a surrender of gun ownership rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The politically controversial issue has re-emerged since last week's shooting at a Colorado cinema that killed 12 people.

On Thursday, a bipartisan group of 51 senators threatened to oppose the treaty if it falls short in protecting Americans' constitutional right to bear arms. In a letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the senators expressed serious concerns with the draft treaty that has circulated at the United Nations, saying that it signals an expansion of gun control that would be unacceptable.

Supporters of a treaty argue it would not affect law-abiding individual gun owners.

Britain has taken the lead in pushing for a treaty to reduce the impact of the illicit arms trade.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg discussed treaty prospects with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in London and told reporters and both urged the treaty's adoption.

"Global rules govern the sale of everything from bananas to endangered species to weapons of mass destruction, but not guns or grenades," Clegg said. "This anomaly causes untold suffering in conflicts around the world. 1,000 people are killed daily by small arms wielded by terrorists, insurgents and criminal gangs."

The secretary-general said he was disappointed at the failure to agree on a treaty, calling it "a setback." But he said he was encouraged that states have agreed to continue pursuing a treaty and pledged his "robust" support.

At the end of the negotiating session, Mexico read a joint statement from more than 90 countries saying they "are determined to secure an Arms Trade Treaty as soon as possible."

(AP) ? Chelsea captain John Terry was charged by the English Football Association on Friday with racially abusing an opponent, two weeks after he was cleared by a court of the same offense.

The FA said it considered the evidence from the trial before charging Terry with directing abuse at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match last October.

"I deny the charge, and I will be requesting the opportunity to attend the commission for a personal hearing," Terry said.

The FA alleged Terry "used abusive and-or insulting words and/or behavior ... (and) included a reference to the ethnic origin and-or color and/or race of Anton Ferdinand."

In court, prosecutors claimed that Terry snapped in response to insults about an alleged extramarital affair and bellowed "(expletive) black (expletive)" at Ferdinand.

But Terry said he only used the offensive term sarcastically to counter the profanity he claims Ferdinand was accusing him of using.

The magistrate who ruled on the case at Westminster Magistrates' Court said in his judgment that Terry's explanation was "certainly under the cold light of forensic examination, unlikely."

But he found Terry not guilty of a racially aggravated public order offense after deciding it was "impossible" to be sure what the defender said.

The FA, which has already interviewed Ferdinand and Terry, had to suspend its investigation into October's west London derby when the police probe began.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches last season for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during another Premier League match in October.

Microsoft Officially Admits The Surface Is Likely To - Business Insider

Microsoft executives have been understandably cagey about admitting that competing with its PC partners could damage the relationship with those partners.

Their public statements have indicated that all is hunky dory with Windows PC makers like Dell, HP, Lenovo. Bill Gates said that Microsoft's Surface was the "best of both worlds. You can have a rich eco-system of manufacturers and you can have a few signature devices," he recently said.

And Ballmer swore that Microsoft wasn't going to give itself some kind of financial advantage over its partners -- even though its charging PC makers quite a lot of money for the Windows operating system.

But finally, in it's annual report, the company stepped up and told the truth -- that Surface competes with PC makers and could really hurt Windows 8 sales.

"Our Surface devices will compete with products made by our OEM partners, which may affect their commitment to our platform," the company said in its 10-K filing to the SEC. If Windows 8 doesn't become popular enough, that could "make it more difficult to attract applications developers to our platforms," Microsoft also warned.

And while it was at it, Microsoft also admitted that Apple's was right.

"A competing vertically-integrated model, in which a single firm controls the software and hardware elements of a product and related services, has been successful with some consumer products such as personal computers, mobile phones, gaming consoles, and digital music players," Microsoft said in its report.

"We also offer vertically-integrated hardware and software products and services; however, our competitors have been in the market longer and in some cases have established significantly large user bases."

Compensation controversy over 'Adriatic Alcatraz'

GOLI OTOK, Croatia (AP) ? It rises up from the pristine waters off Croatia's coast, a forbidding mound of rock known as the Adriatic Alcatraz.

The amount former political prisoners are being offered for each day they spent on this hell: $9.

The paltry compensation Serbia's government is granting people imprisoned by late Yugoslav dictator Josip Broz Tito in one of Europe's most notorious post-World War II labor camps has triggered outrage among many ? and threats of a lawsuit.

"It's miserable," said Bozdar Vulovic, one of the few living survivors of the Goli Otok, or Barren Island, camp that was created in 1948.

Nearly 600 prisoners of all ex-Yugoslav nations ? Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Slovenes, Macedonians and Montenegrins ? are estimated to have died on the island from torture and disease; thousands suffered psychological damage from an infamous prison system that pitted the prisoners against each other in a battle for survival.

Goli Otok housed up to 16,000 political prisoners over an eight-year period. They ended up there after being accused by Tito's regime of expressing sympathy toward Josef Stalin and his hardline Soviet dictatorship. Tito, who espoused a more liberal brand of communism, broke with Moscow in 1948, earning him support from the West.

Some of the former Serb inmates are threatening to take the government to an international human rights court for what they say is meager compensation for the horrors they went through.

Others say they will reluctantly accept the offer because they have no time to waste on lengthy legal procedures.

"If you were my age, and if you were in bad health, what would you do?" asked 91-year-old Smilja Filipcev, who spent more than three years at Goli Otok as a woman prisoner.

Serbia has now belatedly decided to rehabilitate the victims of Tito's communist regime, including ex-dissidents, royalists and the Goli Otok inmates.

Authorities said they arrived at the $9 a day figure because Croatia had offered a similar sum. But that was 10 years ago when the money was worth much more. Croatia also gave its nationals "privileged" pension status that resulted in a much higher total package than the Serb one.

In 2003, Slovenia offered its ex-prisoners ?6,300 for each year spent on the island. The other former Yugoslav republics ? Montenegro, Bosnia and Macedonia ? have not yet compensated their nationals.

"The fear that we went through is something that should be compensated," said Vulovic, who was incarcerated on the island for nearly three years. "And great fear it was,"

The controversy in Serbia has revived painful memories of the island camp kept secret for decades. Its existence was largely ignored in the West because inmates were thought to be hardline pro-Soviet communists, not dissidents like the ones in the ex-Soviet gulags in Siberia.

Tito was the undisputed leader of Yugoslavia for 35 years until his death in 1980. Those who publicly declared support after the split with Moscow were summarily dispatched to the island, without a trial.

Vulovic, an 85-year-old Serb citizen who was born in Montenegro, said the inmates on Goli Otok had arranged a "welcoming event" for him and the other newcomers.

"They screamed at us yelling 'down with the scum' and beat us with their hands," he said. "At Goli Otok, we had to spy on each other, and we had to beat other inmates up if they ordered us to do so."

"We were beaten all the time, while working, going to breakfast or to lunch," he said, adding that neither the International Red Cross nor any other international humanitarian organization ever visited the island while he was there.

Vulovic said trivial acts could land people in the camp ? which was often compared to San Francisco's Alcatraz island because no one ever managed to escape.

"It was enough for someone to listen to radio Moscow, or privately say something good about Stalin, to be reported to the secret police and end up on the island," Vulovic said at his small Belgrade apartment with Stalin's portrait and the Bible side-by-side on a bookshelf.

"I was arrested when I was 17," Vulovic said. "The reason for my arrest was stupid. Somebody had written 'Down with Tito, long live Stalin' in chalk on the walls all over my neighborhood" in the Montenegrin seaside town of Kotor.

"According to the logic of the time, they thought that only high school students had access to chalk. So they arrested six of us from that neighborhood, and they beat us until we had to confess that we were the ones that had written those words."

In 1956, the island ended its days as a political prison and was turned into a high-security facility for the hardest criminals. Years after Tito's death, Croatia's tourist organization tried to reopen the 1.9-square-mile (3-square-kilometer) island for tourists willing to pay to re-enact the life of a political prisoner ? including hard labor, stale food and nights in solitary confinement.

The plan, which even had the support of some former inmates who offered to work as tour guides, was scrapped because of the protests by Goli Otok political prisoner organizations.

"This is where the infamous Goli Otok lynches started," said former inmate Vladimir Bobinac, 85, while interviewed at the island, describing a lane of prisoners forced to organize welcoming party for new inmates.

"People were badly beaten, some even died," Bobinac said. "They were beaten out of fear. Those who did not deliver the punches were beaten themselves."

Filipcev, who retains an exceptionally clear-mind in her advanced age, said she was sent to Goli Otok from Serbia because she refused to denounce Stalin in his clash with Tito.

"They loaded us onto freight cars, and we were off," she said.

"When we arrived, they opened the car doors and we saw the sea in front of us. They kicked us out of the freight cars, and we waited for a boat to come pick us up. They loaded us into the ship's hull. They didn't wait for us to go down the stairs, they pushed us down, and we fell on top of each other. Some women fainted; some had their legs and arms broken."

She said that on the island, all the prisoners, including women, were forced to hard labor, mostly digging stones in a quarry.

"There we had wooden boards, with handles on each end, used for carrying heavy loads," she said. "You would trip and fall down onto the rocks. If you got injured, they'd make you sit down and break rocks until your injury was better, and then they would put you back to carrying rocks."

She said that when released, she came back home to Serbia.

"At the time when I was arrested, my elder daughter was four years old, and my younger daughter was two, so when they saw me, the first thing they asked was 'Are you really our mother?'"

Autumn Sky Ranch: Ranch Dog

Ranch Dog

One of our dogs is an Aussie, or Australian Shepherd to be more formal. ? I was told she is from a line of working dogs, not the more fluffy show dog type that I often see. ? She is busy busy busy. ? It's just a shame we don't have animals that need to be tended or herded. ? When she was a puppy, she was a lunatic. ? No other word for it. ? I wasn't sure I could be her only companion so I brought home another puppy. ? He is an Aussie/Golden cross. ? He is much calmer and has to endure being the target of her natural herding instincts. ? She is smarter than any dog I've ever had. ? You might fool her once but you will NEVER fool her twice. ? She anticipates, strategizes, keep track of every one and every thing, and tries to stay a step ahead of the pack at all times. ? But she will collapse into a sweet submissive dog for attention and petting, hoping you will stay there with her all day. ? When she wants attention, she will bump your leg with her pointy nose. ? Over and over and over, until you reach down and pet her. ? Loving and loyal forever.

Erik came into our lives and nicknamed her The Bullet. ? As with herding dogs, she can go from your side, head out to the back of the property, turn and make it back to your side....lickety split. ? She is loyal to us and to our property. ? She barks too much but does her best to keep critters and garbage trucks away from our place. ? She smiles. ? The groomers love her because of her sweet nature...and her smile. ? And now she has taken up howling. ? When the donkeys holler out, she howls along with them. ??

This is our sweet and busy girl. ? We love her very much.

SPEAK UP LIBRARIAN: The Power of Communication

Is there a book for every problem?

As a librarian, naturally I turn to books for help. Currently on my night stand are How to Talk So Teens Will Listen & Listen So Teens Will Talk, Staying Connected to Your Teenager, and Wonderful Ways to Love a Teen ... even when it seems impossible. Need I say more?

Librarian to Hit the Books Again

Recently I decided to apply to grad school to study communication. I became inspired to do this after reading Bruno Kahne's Lessons of Silence.?In this article, he describes his approach to training corporate executives to communicate more effectively. His unique method is to employ people who are deaf as the trainers. They do not teach sign language; instead they demonstrate deaf cultural behaviors that allow them to communicate effectively. I realized then the significance of the behavioral changes I have made and continue to make as I face communication challenges on a daily basis. I began to consider how experiencing hearing loss made me become a more attentive and strategic listener. I wondered if anyone besides Kahne had studied this and thought I would like to do that type of research.

But mainly, I want to further my knowledge of communication and hone my writing and speaking skills so I can be more effective as an advocate for people with hearing loss.

Japan government names radiation physicist as new atomic regulator head

TOKYO | Thu Jul 26, 2012 7:44am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government on Thursday nominated Shunichi Tanaka, an expert in radiation physics, to head a new safety regulator, taking a step forward in its efforts to restore trust in nuclear power, shattered by last year's Fukushima disaster.

But it is uncertain whether confidence can be restored with public feeling running high against the "nuclear village" -- industry officials, politicians and utility operators seen as failing to avert the disaster.

The Fukushima accident - meltdowns linked to the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that crippled the plant - has rejuvenated the anti-nuclear movement. A rally last week drew 100,000 protesters.

The government hopes that the new safety body, to be launched in September, will instill more confidence than two current regulatory bodies, both heavily criticized for their cozy ties with the power industry.

Tanaka, 67, a former deputy head of the Cabinet Office's Atomic Energy Commission, was nominated for the new safety watchdog along with four other candidates.

"We're in an extremely severe situation as to whether we can regain public confidence in the state and the administration," Environment Minister Goshi Hosono told reporters after the government put forward the nominations to parliament.

"We have selected suitable persons from the standpoint that those who have not learned a lesson from Fukushima are not qualified to be involved in nuclear energy administration."

Japan restarted two reactors this month to avoid a potential blackout in the summer -- all of Japan's 50 operating nuclear reactors had been taken offline for checks after the disaster.

But reconnecting even two reactors to the power grid has consolidated anti-nuclear feeling.

NOMINATIONS POSTPONED

The nominations were called off a week ago when media leaks prompted lawmakers to seek government clarification.

The nominees -- including a reactor expert, a radiology expert, a former ambassador to the United Nations and a seismologist -- must be approved by parliament.

In principle, lawmakers refuse to consider nominations to key posts if they have been leaked to the media, but they exempted the nominations from the "no leak" rule this time, given the limited pool of qualified candidates.

Experts say the safety commission's credibility will hinge on its members, but that it is hard to find people with expertise who are not clearly linked to either the nuclear industry or the opposing camp.

Critics see some nominees, including Tanaka, as closely linked to the "nuclear village". But Environment Minister Hosono defended his nomination, saying Tanaka had already offered an apology for the disaster and had contributed to decontamination efforts in his home region.

Two inquiries into the disaster, one commissioned by the government and another by parliament, delivered a damning assessment of how regulators, Fukushima's operator and government officials handled the crisis.

The parliamentary probe accused the regulators and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Fukushima's operator, of collusion, referring to the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl as a "man-made" disaster.

KEEP CALM, CARRY ON

LONDON ? Get off Twitter, keep your eyes on the ground in the Olympic village and, whatever you do, don't gape at all those British flags or messages of encouragement from what seems like the entire country. Like all British athletes, the gymnasts are feeling the magnitude of competing in a home Olympics. Add to that the heightened expectations for a program that's become an emerging power since Beijing and, well, it can be a little much. "It's been overwhelming, definitely," says Rebbeca Tunney, who, at 15, is the youngest member of the entire British delegation. "I wasn't expecting it to be like this. I was expecting it to be huge. But this is different."

BECKHAM TO FEATURE

He had hoped for more, but David Beckham will at least have some degree of participation in the games. "It is some kind of role in the opening ceremony which I am honored to be involved in because obviously I was involved in the start process with this seven years ago," Beckham told The Associated Press. "And for Seb (Sebastian Coe) to have kept me involved, I'm very proud of that." The 37-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder had wanted to play for Britain's football team at the games, but he was not included in the squad.

TRAVEL TROUBLES

More signs Tuesday that London's transit system is feeling the strain, but it's all quite good-natured ? at least for now.

At St. Pancras International station, the launching point for the high-speed Javelin train that takes visitors to the Olympic Park gates, more than 100 people couldn't get onto the platform this afternoon. Eventually, they got on to two trains but neither was going anywhere.

Confused passengers flip-flopped trains, hoping to get lucky with one that would wisk them away, but both were delayed for at least 50 minutes, with little communication from train supervisors to explain what was happening. Some shouted questions to passing train workers, but this was no foul-mouthed, rush-hour mob foaming at the mouth. Everyone remained calm, if a little agitated, until the first one pulled out of the station.

DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR BRYAN TWINS

Twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan had a bit of trouble getting into the Olympic Park when the American tennis team arrived in London, but it had nothing to do with security guards trying to tell them apart.

The Bryan brothers, among the favorites in the men's doubles tournament, missed the team's news conference because they were stopped at the security check point. According to Tim Curry, the director of the U.S. Tennis Association, they had failed to go to the proper welcoming desk to have their accreditations validated.

"They were trying to get by with the non-laminated one, which is step No. 1 ? laminate your credential," Curry said. "They got stopped in security and are heading back to the welcome center."

FROM ROW 62 AT THE OLYMPIC AQUATIC CENTER

The worst seats in the Olympics? Check out the very top row of the London Aquatic Center.

From the main concourse, it's a staggering hike up 169 steeply pitched steps to row 62. Tickets in that part of the building should've at least come with a warning: Making this climb could be hazardous to your health unless you're in decent physical condition.

The view isn't much, either. The entire pool is visible, in spite of the sloping roof over the temporary seats, but the swimmers look like ants in the water. Fortunately, there are video screens hanging from the ceiling.

Also note, on days when the weather turns unseasonably balmy, as it did Tuesday on the hottest day of the year in Britain, the top row of the aquatic center is downright boiling. The building is already kept on the warm side for the comfort of the scantily clad swimmers, and the heat was nearly unbearable on the top row Tuesday.

Just imagine what it's going to feel like with 17,000 fans around you.

GETTING A GLIMPSE

The Olympic Park is ringed off by security fences, making access for the public difficult except for those with credentials and, later this week, tickets. But that hasn't stopped the public from coming out to take a look. And some locations are clearly better than others.

At the large, multistory John Lewis department store ? on the edge of the Olympic Park and nestled in a sprawling shopping mall ? dozens of people took advantage of the wide, tall window that overlooks the park and provides a clear view of the main stadium that will be the site of Friday night's opening ceremonies.

Children and adults pressed against the window to catch a view, as today's clear, cloudless skies provided a crystal-clear picture of the park and other parts of London.

SERENA'S BACK ? AND NOT BOTHERED BY HER BACK

Serena Williams says her back is just fine and won't hamper her attempt at another title at Wimbledon.

But whether she'll go for three Olympic golds or just two is still up in the air.

Williams pulled out of a World Team Tennis match last week to rest her back ahead of the London Olympics, but said Tuesday she's fit and ready for a quick return to the All England Club. She won her fifth Wimbledon title there this month, and also teamed with sister Venus to win the doubles tournament.

"I feel really good going into these Olympic Games, and wanting to do really well," Serena Williams said at a news conference with the U.S. team.

Venus and Serena will try to defend their doubles gold medal as well, though the team has yet to announce which players will feature in mixed doubles.

Venus said both she and Serena have the ability to win all three tournaments, but that "we know we have to be in the ultimate fitness level to do so."

"At the end of the day it's really up to what our team captains want, and obviously being realistic and seeing who really has the best chance to win because we really want to bring medals home," Venus said.

ATCHOO!

New Zealand is taking no chances with the health of its rowing squad in the run-up to the London Olympics.

A quarantine was in operation Tuesday for the squad's first and only press access before the Olympic regatta begins on Saturday. Media who had arrived in Britain less than 48 hours previously were banned from attending.

Officials wouldn't say whether the decision was made as a direct result of the bug picked up by squad standout Mahe Drysdale just before the single sculls event at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, which cost him the chance of the gold medal. He started a clear favorite but finished third.

Bottles of hand antiseptics were on tables in the sprawling gardens at their residence close to Dorney Lake, the venue for the regatta, as the Kiwi rowers enjoyed some down-time before afternoon practice.

Part of the rowers' Olympic briefing kit even contains directives on how to wash your hands ? at least 30 seconds should be spent on each wash, apparently.

"I'm being a little bit more careful but I'm not going to be wearing masks around and not shaking people's hands," Drysdale said. "That's just going overboard."

GOLD IS NOT THE ONLY COLOR

With tennis players getting a respite from the traditional all-white outfits usually donned at Wimbledon, Venus Williams is going all out to flaunt some red and blue as well.

The defending Olympic doubles champion arrived in London with her hair done up in thin braids, with extensions inserted in various variations of red, white and blue. To that she added plenty of blue eye makeup and bright red lipstick, for a distinctly patriotic look.

"I'm here to represent the U.S., from head to toe basically. Hair right down to the finger nails," Williams said at a news conference with the American team. "It's just so much fun, I think we all find how proud we are of where we come from when these weeks come around. It's just fun and amazing to just represent, we all feel that way."

WHAT ? NO A/C?

You'd have to forgive the organizers for smirking at this one.

So many people feared the games would be a washout. Yet now the Dominicans are saying it's too hot.

"The apartments in the village don't have any air conditioning and at least since we've been here it's been really hot," says Edwin Rodriguez, the country's gymnastics federation president.

Relief is probably on the way. Forecasts suggest the hot spell should end by the weekend.

WORD FROM THE WILLIAMSES

Venus and Serena Williams love London. Not surprising, given how many Wimbledon titles they've won here. But they were not buttering up the host city as they arrived for the Olympic tennis tournament. Rome, says Venus, is her favorite city. Serena likes Paris.

Do the fashion-conscious sisters go in for London shopping? Not really.

"In terms of shopping, the pound has always been so strong," Williams says. "We stay away from a lot of the shopping here. We get it done where the American dollar has a bit more impact."

CAN'T GET IN

Dominican gymnast Yamilet Pena, who has high hopes of winning a medal, almost didn't get into the country Tuesday.

There was a discrepancy between her passport details and her Olympic credentials and she was barred from entering for four hours ? "but it's all been solved now," says Edwin Rodriguez, the country's relieved gymnastics federation president.

IT'S BEEN A SCORCHER

It's hot out.

Today has officially been the hottest day of the year in Britain. A temperature of 85.5 Fahrenheit (29.7 Celsius) was recorded in the southeast of the country near Gatwick Airport outside London. True, if you're in Arizona (where parts of old London Bridge now sit), that's not too bad. But for London, it's pretty intense.

After initially predicting a chance of rain Friday, forecasters now say the hot, dry conditions might hold out for that evening's opening ceremony.

TRAIN-ING TROUBLES:

London is expecting 1 million visitors a day during the games and up to 3 million extra journeys each day on an already beleaguered transit system.

And having spent 6.5 billion pounds ($10 billion) upgrading London's network since it won the bid in 2005, organizers need that investment to pay off or risk spoiling the experience for tourists ? and grumpy locals ? who could get stuck on trains and in queues when they should be getting stuck into the Olympics.

On Monday night, two train links into the Olympic Park were temporarily down as organizers held their test event for the opening ceremony.

FROM CHINA WITH LOVE

Standing outside Buckingham Palace and peering through the railings are three ladies in bright white T-shirts with 'I love London' emblazoned across the front.

The mother and two daughters from Fuzhou, China, had planned to come for the Olympics but couldn't get any hotel rooms or tickets so they decided to come earlier instead with the intention of absorbing a bit of the pre-Games atmosphere.

"We just came to see how everything looks, from the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, all the way here," said 25-year-old Yang Pei. She says it feels similar to China shortly before the Beijing Games in 2008.

SOAKING UP THE SUN

Londoners are flocking to St. James' Park to make the most of the sunshine ? something you just have to grab when you can. They would usually only have the ducks and pigeons to watch but now they can look across the park's lake at the hustle and bustle of workers preparing the Olympic venues and facilities.

TICKLED PINK

Could romance blossom on the Olympic badminton courts at Wembley Arena? China's coach seems to think so.

China's team is familiar with the courts ? it won all five events in the arena at the 2011 badminton world championship ? but not the new color scheme.

"The pink color ? it's romantic," said coach Li Yongbo. "It's like a place where boyfriends and girlfriends meet."

ELUSIVE NORTH KOREANS

The North Korean women's soccer team is eligible to play at the Olympics despite being banned from the next World Cup after five players tested positive for steroids.

Team officials at the time said the players failed the test because they'd been given musk deer gland therapy after getting struck by lightning during training.

It seems they're taking no chances this time. Says coach Sin Ui Gun: "There is a hall with some games machines and table tennis. They love to spend the time inside because in Glasgow, as you know, it rains quite heavily on us."

The most decorated woman in the history of British gymnastics isn't ready to call it quits, but 27-year-old Beth Tweddle says she won't be around for Rio in 2016.

The three-time world championship gold medalist plans to keep on training after the games because "I wouldn't know what to do with myself," but says she'll cede the stage to "the younger generation" well before Rio.

PRANKSTER ALERT

What do you do to calm the nerves before the biggest meet of your life? If you're the British men's gymnastics team, you play practical jokes on each other.

It was Kristian Thomas' turn on Monday night. The 23-year-old was complaining he couldn't get his air conditioning to work. Teammate Louis Smith fixed it. Sort of. Smith purposely neglected to hook up the exhaust fan. When Smith returned to the room a couple hours later, Thomas was drenched in sweat, then laughter when Smith figured out what happened.

WATER, THE WRONG TYPE

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. Sweltering photographers working at the Olympic pool found one crucial thing in short supply Tuesday ? water. Sure, the pool was full of the stuff (the average Olympic pool holds 2,500,000 liters or 660,430 gallons of the stuff if the Internet is to be believed) but it's not for drinking. An official at the pool says the venue is not yet officially open and for now there's a drinking fountain outside.

LONDON'S EYEFUL TOWER

A writer at Building Design magazine branded it "a contorted mass of entrails". The BBC said: "a catastrophic collision between two cranes." Others, though, are giving it a thumbs-up.

Will the ruby red steel tower that rises above the Olympic Park ? conceived as London's answer to the Eiffel Tower in Paris ? win over the public? Remember this: The Eiffel Tower, one of Europe's most loved landmarks, was once loathed. It was built in the 19th Century as a temporary structure for a world fair. And Parisians weren't impressed.

THE O-WORD

Stores and pubs around London are getting in the spirit of the Games ? but don't call 'em the Olympics.

With concerns running high about running afoul of Olympics branding rules and confusion over what is or isn't allowed, locals are getting creative in promoting their Olympic offerings. One pub in Camden placed chalkboards on the sidewalk saying "the torch with no name will pass us by" and "can you guess why we'll be open Thursday," highlighting their hours and specials for the torch relay day.

Bartender Georgie Fisher said she'd written the boards for the Lyttelton Arms after hearing she might not be allowed to use the O-word. "My boss said specifically not to use it and instead to try to think of something sassy," she says. http://bit.ly/Qxmo0B

If I turn right where I'm not supposed to, it's 60 pounds ($93)," said Rahmid Mohamed, slamming on his brakes to avoid an angry cabbie who swerved in front of him to avoid white barricades.

THE LONDON BUZZ

Standing in front of the official Olympics countdown clock to soak up the atmosphere, Robin Marsh from Bromley in Kent is looking forward to the games.

"There is a real buzz. Everyone is really excited," says the 18-year-old graphic designer.

Marsh is going to the athletics with his whole family. But what about his friend who couldn't get tickets to see anything he wanted?

"I think if you live in the greater London region, there is just a great feeling for something historic," said Danny Vance, 18, a Christian minister, also from Kent. "This is only going to happen once in your lifetime, so there is definitely a sense that we are involved with something very important for our country. And you can feel that."

FAMILY REUNION

On Friday in London, sprinter Jeneba Tarmoh will meet her half brother for the first time. It's been in the works since she made the U.S. Olympic team as a member of the relay pool.

Tarmoh says her brother John Mannah was born in Sierra Leone and moved to London with his father when he was 8 years old. Her mother ended up relocating to San Jose, Calif., where Tarmoh grew up.

Although she's never met him, Tarmoh has talked to her sibling on the phone. He's 15 years older than her.

Her plan: to catch up over dinner at his house.

"It's going to be great running and meeting my brother for the first time, having my nieces and nephews watch me in my element," Tarmoh says.

THE OTHER OLYMPIC RINGS

You know something major is happening when you hear this: For the first time since the funeral of King George VI in 1952, Big Ben is temporarily changing its tune to celebrate the start of the Olympics. For three minutes, starting at 8:12 a.m. (0712 GMT) on Friday, the famous bell at the British Parliament will ring more than 40 times.

People across the country are being urged to join in the fun, ringing doorbells and bicycle bells as loudly as possible.

The melody will even stretch to Antarctica, with British researchers ready to ring.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Beach volleyball will be what people flock to see at London's Horse Guards Parade landmark once the Olympics begin, but right now it is very much business as usual.

London is all about tradition, and at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday is the changing of the guard at Horse Guards Arch.

Wojtek Delik, a 28-year-old restaurant worker from Poland, was watching the ceremony for the very first time with friends Tuesday.

"I think it's quite cool, you can see modern times mixed with old times so it's quite good, in London, in a big city like this," he says.

Household troops, typically dressed in red tunics and bearskins, have been guarding the Sovereign and Royal Palaces since 1660.

CEREMONY OF WONDERS (NO BLABBING)

Danny Boyle has let 60,000 people in on the secrets of his Olympic opening ceremony ? and then begged them to keep the information to themselves.

Tens of thousands of spectators who attended a technical rehearsal for Friday's ceremony entered the stadium to be greeted by signs imploring them to "Save the Surprise." Boyle, the Academy Award-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire," addressed the crowd with a personal plea not to blab, for the sake of future viewers and the 10,000 volunteer performers who have been working on the spectacle for months.

Many details have already leaked out out of the ceremony, titled "Isles of Wonder" and inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and by two centuries of British history and culture.

And Boyle left some gaps in Monday's run-through where extra-secret segments will appear on Friday.

Most of those who saw the show seem to be keeping mum. Many tweeted enthusiastically, but vaguely, about the contents of the show, which mixes grand spectacle with British humor and irreverence.

Many of the spectators streaming out of the stadium afterward said they had been wowed ?even those who had been skeptical at first.

EDINBURGH'S FINEST

Olympic fever hasn't swept through all of Britain ? at least not yet.

Most people in Edinburgh, Scotland, are focused on the upcoming Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an annual festival and demonstration that takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. But that doesn't mean there wasn't a cheer inside pubs such as Maggie Dickinson's on Grassmarket on Monday when Edinburgh's own cycling star Sir Chris Hoy ? already Scotland's most successful Olympian ? was chosen to carry the British flag for the Opening Ceremony.

Hoy won his first Olympic gold at the Athens Games, but cemented his legacy in Beijing, where he became the first Brit to win three gold medals in a single Olympics since Henry Taylor in 1908. Hoy was chosen to carry the Union Jack at the Closing Ceremony in 2008, and will now carry it for the Opening Ceremony on Friday after a vote of the 542 members of the British team. Hoy will be trying to defend his gold medals in the keirin and the team sprint when the track cycling program begins.

Just how popular is Hoy in Scotland? The Scottish National Velodrome being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be named in his honor.

FROWN FOR THE CAMERA

Only boring, mean people can be a part of the Olympic Games. That goes for athletes, volunteers, journalists ? everybody.

FLAME MYSTERY

So where will the Olympics flame burn? Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal says the ruby-red sculpture that towers over London's Olympic Stadium is not the cauldron that will hold the ceremonial flame. Mittal had floated the idea, but plans arrived too late for consideration.

The lighting of the cauldron is always a big moment for the Olympics, and organizers usually withhold details to ensure drama. But usually there is some structure ? somewhere ? that hints where the flame will burn.

Suspicion had long fallen on the ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower, but Mittal says the tower is art, not a fire vessel for the games that start Friday.

GAMES ? WHAT GAMES?

AP's Joseph White reports in from Scotland:

Yes, I'm at the Olympics ? but I'm some 400 miles (640 kilometers) from center stage.

Glasgow is hosting some of the soccer matches but the Scottish city doesn't have much of an Olympic vibe. In London, one can hardly walk 20 feet without spotting a special Olympic traffic lane or a billboard or some sort of notice; in Glasgow, there is a lonely sign at the main train station telling fans where to queue to catch the subway to historic Hampden Park, plus some Olympic-themed banners lining the streets.

The action starts with a pair of women's matches Wednesday ? two days before the opening ceremony in London ? and the locals have given away thousands of tickets to schools and other youth so the 52,000-seat stadium won't feel so empty.

The two cities can't even agree on the weather.

London had a beautiful sunny day Monday, while Glasgow was so wet and dreary that the U.S. women's team had to take their team photo in the stadium's VIP seats instead of on the field to stay dry. Tuesday in Glasgow, however, is sunnier.

On a recent day, Kati was sporting designs for Great Britain, Sao Tome and Principe, USA, Myanmar and South Africa, all on one hand. The most complicated design? She thinks it's the U.S. Virgin Islands, which packs an eagle, state colors and a shield all into one nail.

TORCH INTERLUDE

From AP's Fergus Bell, a Londoner:

At 8:47 a.m. the Olympic Torch passed along the route near my house, and I was able to experience the torch relay as it was meant to be experienced. And what is that, precisely?

Hundreds of excited men, women and children lined the residential suburban streets. Next came the huge police presence: I counted at least six police motorcycles before I caught a glimpse of the procession.

One poor woman innocently reversed out of her driveway at the wrong moment and was promptly surrounded. The police were good-natured; with three days left, they've probably seen it all.

Then you see the runner. Well, not quite.

First you have at least three buses representing various Olympic sponsors adorned with toned promotional staff cheering about the runner behind. When members of the crowd do finally catch a glimpse of the runner decked out in the official white torch relay uniform, they rush in, cameras out, as they cheer and shriek.

And then it's over. In moments, it's all gone. The cheers echo down the street as everyone disperses, each carrying a big grin.

RIVER GOLF

Talk about a water trap.

U.S. PGA Tour players Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson previewed golf's inclusion at the 2016 Olympics by hitting purple balls toward a floating green on London's River Thames in late evening sunshine.

The tee box was on a barge and the floating green bobbed under the giant Olympic rings on the historic bridge. Using lob wedges, Garcia got three of his five shots on the bright green artificial turf island from around 75 yards while Johnson got two ? or maybe it was three.

The pair struggled to see where those little magenta balls ? the official color of the London Olympics ? landed. Curious Londoners peered over the edge of the bridge in bright evening sunshine to see what was going on. Some waved flags.

Golf will be included at the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, returning for the first time since 1904.

Said Garcia just before the stunt on the choppy water: "Courses usually don't move this much, but it's definitely going to be fun."
