Sony responds to Stringer replacement reports

Sony has released a statement denying claims that it has already decided to replace current president Howard Stinger with former PlayStation boss Kazuo Hirai.

The statement was issued in response to a Nikkei report this weekend, which claimed Hirai, who is currently head of Sony consumer products, will be promoted to company president.

According to the report, the executive change is to be finalised in February board meetings, with Hirai assuming the role as early as April. The move is said to be driven by a desire to ease the workload of current chairman, president and CEO Stringer, who would stay on as chairman and CEO.

However, Sony said in a statement: "Certain media reports were published on January 7th, 2012 regarding Sony Corporation's executive officers' appointments. Sony Corporation has made no announcement in this regard and nothing has been determined at this time."

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House has acknowledged that Sony endured a "pretty tough" 2011, and said that a successful Vita launch could help give employees a morale lift.
