Corporate cooking classes in London: the perfect team-building event

?

The best corporate events are dynamic, fun and teach real skills which will be relevant back at work. Balancing the three can be difficult, especially while trying to find an activity which can be enjoyed by everyone. Corporate cooking classes are the perfect solution, and there are many available in the heart of London. Cooking together under the direction of a professional chef is both rewarding and satisfying. After all, there is a tasty meal and a glass of wine at the end of it.

?

Whether or not you like TV chefs like Gordon Ramsay, you have to give it to them, they are incredibly skilled. Busy kitchens can be stressful places, especially for the professionals, and you often see potential disasters miraculously averted at the last moment. Leadership and teamwork are essential and however disagreeable his manner, Ramsay is a brilliant leader.

?

Corporate cooking classes are far more fun and relaxing than the cheffing you see on TV, but still require leadership, teamwork and an ability to work under pressure. Your team aren?t Michelin starred chefs and the food won?t be served to the London public, but they will still want to get it right. People have to have a clear role and manage their time effectively to deliver the goods.

?

Cookery can bring people together in surprising ways, as well. ?Without exception, everyone enjoysfood and can cook to a certain level. Whereas some corporate activities alienate employees who have no interest in them, cooking can provide common ground between people who previously hadn?t had much to talk about. Cooking breaks down barriers and helps people communicate more effectively. It builds trust and confidence.

?

Although the cooking in itself is great fun, the real treat for your staff comes at the end of the day when they can eat what they?ve created. Having the opportunity to get everyone together to discuss the experience is incredibly useful, both so they can laugh about their mistakes and reflect on what they have learned.

?

Cooking events don?t just have to be for team building, either. They can also be a memorable way to entertain clients with a cooking activity, meal and branded goodies given away at the end. These could be anything from aprons to eatables. While a meal on its own can be a great opportunity to network, learning some new skills whilst mingling in the kitchen gives something more lasting to the client ? something they won?t have experienced elsewhere.

?

Product launches and PR events also work in this environment, especially for food and kitchen-based products. Some companies create bespoke corporate events that will allow you to promote your business or product ? not necessarily with a cooking activity (although this could be part of it), but using a professional kitchen as a chic, modern venue.

Mexico Election: Who Are Enrique Pe?a Nieto And The Other Two Top Candidates?

Mexican voters will head to the polls Sunday to elect the country's next president and vote in an entirely new Congress (500-member lower house and 128-member Senate). Additionally, six governorships (the states of Morelos, Jalisco, Chiapas, Tabasco, the Federal District, and Guanajuato) are being contested, as well as the mayoralties of key cities.

If the polls bear out, poised to win the presidency handily is Enrique Pe?a Nieto, the popular former governor of the vote-rich State of Mexico, whose well-oiled campaign has never slipped from frontrunner status, consistently maintaining strong leads over its two main opponents:Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador of the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), and Josefina V?zquez Mota of the center-right National Action Party (PAN).

In this week's final media polls, Pe?a Nieto commands leads of between 10 and 17 percentage points over the second-place L?pez Obrador. A comfortable margin for Mexico's next president is important, since it would allay fears of post-election rancor and civil strife and provide a clear mandate - something that outgoing President Felipe Calder?n lacked in his first days in office in 2006 after winning by less than seven-tenths of one percentage point over L?pez Obrador. Because many Mexicans felt the close margin was the product of a conspiracy to deny the left-leaning L?pez Obrador a victory, the election was widely disputed and cast a pall over Calder?n's first days in office.

Below are profiles of the top three contenders in Mexico's 2012 presidential election:?

The Frontrunner: Enrique Pe?a Nieto

The candidate of the Institutional Revolutionary Party and former governor of Mexico's most populous state, the State of Mexico, Enrique Pe?a Nieto is far and away the frontrunner heading into tomorrow's vote. His juggernaut campaign has capitalized on voter disenchantment after two terms (twelve years) of PAN presidencies; projected an air of cool discipline and competence in contrast to the bickering and division of the rival parties; and received favorable -- some say prejudiced -- coverage from the country's major broadcasters. These factors, along with the candidate's good looks and charisma, if not strong policy and intellectual credentials, have made him the odds-on favorite to replace Calder?n come December, when the president's term ends.

Analysts note that there are two main reasons behind Pe?a Nieto's success. First are the unique political and economic circumstances of this year's race. High levels of narcoviolence, disappointing economic growth, and incumbency fatigue have worked strongly in Pe?a Nieto's favor. At the same time, the PRI's legacy of governance - it controlled Mexican politics for most of the 20th century - and momentum from the party's near-sweep of the 2009 midterms have convinced voters that Pe?a Nieto is the best of the current field. Additionally, his party's organizational capacity at the local and state levels is particularly formidable: the PRI controls the governorships of close to three-quarters of the Mexican states, and in this cycle has made surprising plays in PAN bastions, such as the conservative western state of Jalisco.

A Diferente Candidate: Josefina Vazquez Mota

The first female presidential candidate in Mexican history, the PAN's Josefina Vazquez Mota would probably be a formidable contender in any other election cycle. But in this year's race, the otherwise strong candidate has been blindsided by Pe?a Nieto's juggernaut campaign and has suffered from her own party's relative organizational weakness at the state and local levels. Additionally, campaign incompetence and incumbency fatigue with fellow party member Calder?n has hurt her. An example of internal division within her campaign: the haphazard mid-race decision to switch her official slogan from "Josefina Diferente" to "Josefina La Jefa." The change led to brand confusion, provided the media with an easy target, and did not help Vazquez Mota's poll numbers, which have hovered in the mid-20 percent range compared with a consistent 40 percent and higher for Pe?a Nieto. More recently, the Vazquez Mota campaign suffered another intrapartisan wound, when former president Vicente Fox asked her supporters to shift allegiance to Pe?a Nieto, lest Lopez Obrador, who consistently polls in second place, make a stronger-than-expected showing.

The Populist: Andres Manuel L?pez Obrador

This will probably be the last serious presidential challenge by populist center-left politician Andres Manuel L?pez Obrador, a former governor of the Federal District who nearly won the 2006 race. Lopez Obrador's poll numbers have improved modestly throughout the race and show him ?a consistent second with around 30 percent. Yet it appears highly unlikely that he can hope for anything better than a distant second-place finish, and it is highly unlikely that he will be able to marshal loyalists to challenge vote results or lead anti-government street protests as occurred in late 2006. Then, Mexico City was held hostage by L?pez Obrador supporters, who waged a months-long sit-in in to force a comprehensive review of all ballots. However, this time around, there appears to be little appetite for indulging such protests by either outgoing Mexico City Governor Marcelo Ebrard or his likely successor, Miguel Mancera, even if both of them belong to the PRD like L?pez Obrador. ?This is partly because such protests would be incongruent with what is expected to be a stronger-than-expected showing by the party in the day's congressional and gubernatorial votes, including projected wins outside of its Mexico City bastion.?

Jim Cramer says, ?Contrarian Investing? Forget About It?

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research

Jim Cramer says, ?Contrarian Investing? Forget About It?

Contrary to Cramer's belief, contrarian investing works. Just ask the likes of Warren Buffet, George Soros, John Templeton, David Dreman, and Jim Rogers.

A couple of weeks ago Mad Money host Jim Cramer made the above declaration regarding contrarian investing. He went on to say, ?I think it?s wrong. I think it doesn?t matter? I think it?s really a treacherous way to invest.?

I was a little baffled when I saw excerpt. Then I saw the editorial written by Producer Drew Sandholm where he gave the following definition of a ?contrarian investor:?

?In the investment world, a contrarian is someone who takes a position that differs from the majority. If a particular sector is ?hated? by most investors, a contrarian might want to buy in. After all, if few investors like the sector, a contrarian thinks there are few people left to sell, making it immune to big declines.?

Sandholm went on to write that Cramer feels the strategy to be ?too hazardous? to recommend. It infers that contrarian investing is based purely on sentiment and that investors should be using fundamentals and research to decide which companies to invest in.

However, here at Investment U, we don?t feel these two things are mutually exclusive. You can still look for solid fundamentals in regions and sectors that were abandoned by ?the herd.?

For instance, Alexander Green recently wrote about finding fundamentally sound companies in the beaten-down natural gas sector.

Contrarian Investing is Based on Fundamentals

Contrarians aren?t rebellious teens, rejecting their parents? way of investing. What the piece misses is that contrarian investing is based on fundamentals. Many times popular investment sentiment is not. Do we need to remind you of the dot com and housing bubbles?

Investment U defines a contrarian investor as someone who believes in independent wealth building and profits rather than the actions of the herd. The key isn?t to go against the grain for the sake of being different, but to find opportunities based on solid fundamentals that are ignored or shunned by everyone else. And if this is done successfully, then you get in on the ground floor and watch profits rise as the rest of the investment world gets a clue.

In Cramer?s defense, I believe he?s specifically speaking about those investors who are looking at whether a sector is under or overweighted compared to the S&P 500 in an attempt to time the market. But that definition doesn?t cover the whole contrarian movement.

The Vast Spectrum of Contrarian Investing

I don?t think anyone out there would call Jim Rogers, George Soros, or Warren Buffett contrarian day traders. However, the contrarian part of that statement is true.

  • Jim Rogers loves buying undervalued assets. What he saw in gold and silver over a decade ago, he currently sees in the agricultural sector. Agriculture prices are ? on a historical basis ? extremely depressed and this is where he sees his next opportunity.
  • On September 16, 1992, Black Wednesday, Soros? fund sold short more than $10 billion in pounds, profiting from the U.K. government?s reluctance to either raise its interest rates to levels comparable to those of other European Exchange Rate Mechanism countries or to float its currency.
  • Warren Buffett is famously ?greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy.? He focuses on the quality of the business rather than the short-term or near-future share price or market moves. He takes a long-term, large scale, business value-based investment approach that concentrates on good fundamentals and intrinsic business value, rather than the share price. His recent bets on housing are a good example of his contrarian prowess.

So, I do agree with Cramer that investors should avoid investing simply on sentiment. But that?s not our brand of contrarian investing anyways. We look for fundamentally strong businesses in areas where many investors essentially threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Good Investing,

Jason Jenkins

Sen. Rand Paul proposes 'fetal personhood' amendment to flood ...

By Eric W. Dolan
Tuesday, June 26, 2012 17:46 EDT

?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) expressed his frustration on Tuesday at Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who offered an anti-abortion amendment to legislation that would renew the flood insurance program.

?I?m told last night that one of our Republican senators wants to offer an amendment ? listen to this one ? wants to offer an amendment on when life begins,? Reid said on the Senate floor. ?I think some of this stuff is just ? I have been very patient working with my Republican colleagues in allowing relevant amendments on issues, and sometimes we even do non-relevant amendments. But really, on flood insurance??

Reid did not mention the Republican senator in question, but Politico identified Paul as the author of the amendment, which would state that life begins at the moment of conception. The amendment seeks to completely prohibit abortion.

?I am not going to put up with that on flood insurance,? Reid said. ?I can be condemned by outside sources ? my friends can say, ?Let them have a vote on it.? There will not be a vote on that on flood insurance. We?ll either do flood insurance with the amendments that deal with flood insurance, or we won?t do it. We?ll have an extension.?

ATLANTA (AP) ? Would you go to a drugstore to get tested for AIDS?

Health officials want to know, and they've set up a pilot program to find out.

The $1.2 million program will offer free rapid HIV tests at pharmacies and in-store clinics in 24 cities and rural communities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

Drugstores now offer blood pressure checks, flu shots and a few other types of health services. Officials are hoping testing for the AIDS virus will become another routine service.

"By bringing HIV testing into pharmacies, we believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and reduce the stigma associated with HIV," CDC's Dr. Kevin Fenton said in a statement. He oversees the agency's HIV prevention programs.

The tests are already available at seven places, and the CDC will soon pick 17 more locations.

The HIV test is a swab inside the mouth and takes about 20 minutes for a preliminary result. If the test is positive, customers will be referred to a local health department or other health-care providers for a blood test to confirm the results, counseling and treatment.

When the project ends next summer, CDC officials will analyze what worked well and what didn't, said Paul Weidle, the epidemiologist who is heading up the project.

An estimated 1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV, but as many as 20 percent of them don't know they carry the virus, according to the CDC. It can take a decade or more for an infection to cause symptoms and illness.

Since 2006, the CDC has recommended that all Americans ages 13 to 64 get tested at least once, not just those considered at highest risk: gay men and intravenous drug users.

On special occasions, health organizations have sent workers to some drugstores to offer HIV testing. This week, Walgreens ? the nation's largest chain of pharmacies ? is teaming with local health departments and AIDS groups to offer free HIV testing at stores in 20 cities.

But this CDC pilot program is different: It's an effort to train staff at the pharmacies to do the testing themselves, and perhaps make it a permanent service.

"I'm excited. It's such a new and novel thing for us," said Sarah Freedman, who manages a Walgreens in Washington, D.C., that is participating in the pilot program.

At her pharmacy, the testing is done in a private room. They've also taken steps to make sure that a customer can very quietly request the test. For example, they've put out stacks of special test request cards ? they look like business cards ? at George Washington University and other nearby businesses. Anyone seeking a test can simply hand the card to the clerk, she said.

Only three or four customers have gone through with a test in the first few weeks.

"We get a lot of questions," she said. "Usually they get the information and they go and sit on it and think about it."

There's a second Walgreens in Washington offering the test, as well as branches in Chicago and Lithonia, Ga. Other test sites: East Pines Pharmacy in Riverdale, Md., Mike's Pharmacy in Oakland, Calif. and a federal Indian Health Service location in Billings, Mont.

Each of the locations will get enough tests to check 200 to 300 people.

6 ways Emma Stone lays on the charm

Carlos Alvarez / Getty Images

By Cody Delistraty

Emma Stone has had a slew of red carpet appearances and interviews lately to promote ?The Amazing Spider-Man,? but it?s been nothing but a breeze for the charismatic actress.

It seems no one?is immune to her understated beauty?and self-deprecating charm. In fact, her New York Magazine profile was so glistening that some article commenters lambasted its ?girl crush? tone. Her fashion sense has been the center of envious attention, and her off-screen relationship with her "Spider-Man" co-star Andrew Garfield (which she?s reticent to publicly discuss) seems to be going swimmingly.

Clearly, Stone is doing?something right. Taking a page out of Dale Carnegie?s famous self-help book, ?How to Win Friends and Influence People,? she?s smiling, listening and appreciating her rise to the ("Easy") A-list, making us fall deeper in love with her one step at a time.

From her PowerPoint-fueled Hollywood start to her humble rise to success, here are six ways that Emma Stone has won us over:

Ambitious adolescence
At 14, Stone enrolled as a freshman at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz.,?but she wanted to go to Los Angeles to be in the movies. So, as she recounted to Blackbook Magazine,?one day she hurried home, made a PowerPoint entitled "Project Hollywood 2004," set it to Madonna?s ?Hollywood? and used it to convince her parents to let her drop out of school and move to L.A. to audition for film and TV. Her mother stayed with her, homeschooling the Scottsdale, Ariz., native through high school.

Discerning choice of roles
Although ?The Amazing Spider-Man? will likely be the role that reaches the biggest audience, her success has been climbing ever since she starred as the heart-meltingly hot high-school dream girl Jules in ?Superbad.? She honed her comedic chops alongside co-star Jonah Hill before showing that con artists can be silly and sexy in ?Zombieland,??and then, drum roll please, ?Easy A? and??Crazy, Stupid, Love? helped perfect her smart, sexy, wry sense of humor which she followed with a serious turn in "The Help," establishing?a?hilarious, serious, various?persona?for the Emma Stone?we now know and love. ? ?

Trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," in which Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy. Opens July 3.

Self-deprecating humor
The way Stone combines her sarcastic humor with real vulnerability has proven to be her siren song. Her turn as Olive Penderghast, a?high-school student who video?diaries her misunderstood "Scarlet Letter"-inspired life in "Easy A,"?allowed Stone to showcase a witty, cultured,?willing-to-be-humbled character?who's nothing but?unforgettable.?We hope she won?t use?her?siren song?to crash us into a cliff, though, because when she turns on the comedic charm, it?s impossible to look away.

Approachability
Between press tours, filming, photo shoots, interviews and maintaining some semblance of a personal life, the natural blonde seems nothing like the average 23-year-old. But compared to the likes of Angelina Jolie or Sean Penn -- who are off?doing good in?Cambodia and Haiti, respectively -- her stateside sensibility lends?itself to greater?approachability and relatability. We're sure she'll take up a cause or two when she's older and more firmly entrenched in the Hollywood elite, but for now, Stone?s youthful, live-in-the-Hollywood moment?sensibility?is a surprisingly?appreciated repose from the busy, hyperaffluent, seemingly out-of-touch movie star we're used to.

Understated (yet unbelievable) looks
Sony Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper noted that with red hair, Stone looks less?like ?someone who will steal your boyfriend,? according to New York Magazine. But whether she?s a redhead, blonde or brunette, the actress, who?s now?the new face of Revlon, could steal a boyfriend or two?sporting any hair color. ?The pretty thing ... it was never a value to me growing up,? she told the magazine, adding that she signed with Revlon so young girls would know they don?t have to look like models to be beautiful.?To?judge for yourself whether she doesn't have?the looks of a model,?here are a?few of her?"Spider-Man" red carpet looks.?(For the record, yes, she's model material.)

She?s not the center of the world (but she is)
Perhaps the most refreshing?-- although most?difficult to believe?-- quality of Stone is that she isn?t too interested in herself or in?sharing her stories. ?I freak out having a Facebook? she told New York Magazine, noting that she only wants her closest friends to know the most personal details of her life, specifically concerning Garfield. Yet, considering the fact that?her face seems to dominate the newstand (now on the?July?Vogue cover), if she wanted to tell story after self-centered story, we're sure millions would be glad to perk up and listen.

Tune into the TODAY show Tuesday for an interview with Emma Stone. Check your local listings for air time.

Total of 79 Potentially New Shark Species Found

News | Evolution

A genetic analysis suggests more overlooked species than scientists anticipated, raising concerns that populations of new species are quite small and endangered

Why do testicles hang the way they do? Is there an adaptive function to the female orgasm? What does it feel like to want to kill yourself? Does ?free will?...

From Nature magazine

A genetic study of thousands of specimens of sharks and rays has uncovered scores of potential new species and is fuelling biologists? debates over the organisation of the family tree of these animals. The work also raises the possibility that some species are even more endangered than previously thought.

Sharks and rays are key predators in marine ecosystems, but the life cycles and population numbers of many species remain poorly understood. The family tree of these animals ? which are part of the elasmobranch subclass ? has proved similarly opaque, with little agreement among researchers over their evolutionary relationships.

Gavin Naylor, a biologist at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his colleagues sequenced samples from 4,283 specimens of sharks and rays as part of a major effort to fill the gaps. The team found 574 species, of which 79 are potentially new, they report in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.

Naylor says that he was ?flabbergasted? by the result, especially because the sequencing covered only around half of the roughly 1,200 species thought to exist worldwide.

The huge number of new species found raises immediate conservation concerns ? the reason that some of these purported new species have gone undetected is probably their close resemblance to already-identified species. The populations of such species may, therefore, be even smaller than estimated, as what was thought to be one population may instead be several smaller populations of separate species.

For example, Naylor?s work suggests that the endangered scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is actually two separate species. ?Scalloped hammerheads in general have taken a huge hit, so it may be even worse than has been documented if there?s more than one species out there,? he says.

Naylor is now working on a project with the US National Science Foundation to catalogue the diversity of sharks and rays and is working to assist the International Union for Conservation of Nature to map which species are where in the world.

?This will have an impact on what is considered endangered and the fragility of different organisms,? he says. ?These are sentinel species of all sorts of other organisms in the sea which are probably undergoing similar or worse kinds of impacts.?

Circling the answer
One of Naylor?s collaborators, William White, an ichthyologist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Hobart, says that their work also highlights some of the problems with the use of genetic information in zoology.

The increasing use of molecular techniques provides a new means to scrutinize the relationship between sharks and rays, he says. But it also shows that some of the existing ideas about their relationships are problematic. ?Part of the problem is some researchers mining data blindly without a good understanding of where that data has come from in the first place and presuming the names are correct which in many cases they are not.?

White and Naylor stress that molecular techniques are only of one many available tools and should be combined with conventional taxonomic work.

Ximena V?lez-Zuazo is a biologist at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and the lead author of a 2011 paper2 that Naylor says suffers from some of the flaws that stem from relying solely on molecular information. Though she strongly defends her group's work, she agrees that shark phylogeny is still a work in progress.

Health Care Services: Work Out Routines for Women: Why Visual ...

Expert Author NJ Rickman

The biggest problem with most work out plans for women is that they are designed by fitness trainers who focus mainly on building muscle. Now that's fine if you don't mind looking muscular; however, most women want to look lean and toned, but not like a smaller version of a male bodybuilder!

The common mantra of most trainers is that "Women don't have enough testosterone to build muscle." Really? Then how do you explain the bodies of female competitive cyclists or speed skaters? They tend to have huge thighs as a result of training hard. Many female swimmers have broad shoulders and muscular arms as a result of both weight training and the demands put on their upper body from their sport. Women CAN and DO build muscle!

Often, when a woman who wants to lose weight and tone up begins to work out at the gym with a trainer, she will notice that her jeans are starting to get a little bit tight at the thigh. She might mention this to her trainer, only to be dismissed and told to perform more squats and lunges.

You guessed it! Her thighs are getting increasingly large from this terrible advice. Frustrated because no one will listen to her concerns, the woman who was initially so excited by her progress ends up quitting exercising entirely. Consequently, she loses the muscle tone she sought out in the first place, and begins to pile her unwanted pounds back on. It's tragic, really.

Finally, someone has addressed women's fitness concerns and goals. Instead of trying to force women to become a junior version of The Hulk, Rusty Moore designed a spin-off of his highly popular "Visual Impact" work out plan just for women. Rusty himself is a long time bodybuilder who got fed up with the bulkiness he was developing. He realized that his ideal body was a lot more like Brad Pitt in "Fight Club" than it was with a huge, over-muscled body builder.

Taking the knowledge he gleaned from reducing his musculature from bodybuilder bulky to Brad Pitt sexy, Rusty decided that women were also in need of a program that would allow them to keep their feminine looks intact while losing unwanted fat and gaining a lean, yet curvy body in the process.

Rusty Moore's Visual Impact for Women is a revolutionary work out plan that flies in the face of conventional fitness programs. Rusty does not have you lifting heavy weights to failure, or performing squat after squat until your legs are shaking.

Rusty focuses more on cardio exercise in Visual Impact for Women to torch fat, while implementing low repetition work with weights. This is contrary to the what the majority of the fitness industry advises for women.

What's really special about Rusty's Visual Impact for Women is that Rusty has designed his program to fit your personal lifestyle. You will find work out plans for both gym and home, and also for four workouts a week and for three workouts per week. Highly flexible, and convenient for users.

Visual Impact's nutrition component is also different from much of what you see elsewhere. Instead of focusing on daily caloric intake, Rusty advices using weekly caloric intake instead. This change lets you have an odd glass of wine or nice dinner out without blowing your diet completely.

The two-pronged approach to fat burning and diet that visual impact provides can give you the body that you've been looking for.

Want to lose weight and get sexily toned without losing your feminine attributes? Go to http://visualimpactforwomenslim.blogspot.ca/ and watch Rusty's video about Visual Impact for Women today.

Samsung Galaxy :: [ROM]ParanoidAndroid

Voila.

Seattle Mariners Successfully Play Professional Baseball

haha what on earth

(The Padres are on the verge of being sold by John Moores. The O'Malley group and Gary Jabara are the two reported finalists, and they're bidding at least $800 million. It's expected that a buyer will be announced shortly.)

Lately I've been more about the bigger picture than usual. Maybe because the smaller picture has been unpleasant, and I don't want to devote too much of my time to that which is unpleasant. But I think it has to do with having missed a whole week on vacation. Coming back from that, I realized how silly it is to care that much about the daily games in a season like this. It's not the games that are important. It's the progress, and how much of it is being made. You can't measure progress if you focus on one game, then the next game, then the next game. You need to take a step back, because it's like a section of sidewalk. From where you stand, it seems to be flat. From the other side of the road, you might notice a slope.

But what's the bigger picture? How big is the bigger picture? How big should the bigger picture be? The smaller picture right now isn't real good. The slightly bigger picture isn't much better. A slightly bigger picture than that still isn't a picture of unicorns riding dinosaurs. If you want a big picture that allows you to feel positive about the Mariners, even with all this losing, consider the segment where Dave Sims and Dave Valle had Bret Boone in the broadcast booth tonight.

At one point, the conversation turned to Boone's family, and Boone was asked whether, if everything broke right, he'd like one of his sons to play professional baseball. To carry on the family tradition. Boone didn't hesitate in saying yes, but then reminded the Daves of how the odds are so slim. Especially with baseball being more of an international sport now than ever before. Boone would like for one of his sons to play professional baseball, but he's certainly not going to just assume that it'll happen. You need otherworldly talent, and you need some strokes of good luck, although maybe fewer strokes of good luck if your last name is Boone.

Bret Boone was right - it's extraordinarily difficult to play professional baseball. It's only exponentially more difficult to play Major League Baseball. There are just so many levels to climb through, so many opportunities to fail. But look at the Seattle Mariners. Every single one of those players is a Major League Baseball player. From Felix Hernandez all the way down to Hisashi Iwakuma! Wow! It is just astonishing how much the various Mariners have accomplished in getting to this point. This is the highest level of baseball competition in the world, and all of those Mariners are right in the thick of it. Not a one of them has disapproving parents, not anymore, not now that they've all made it. All of them have made it.

The Mariners are not a very good baseball team, relative to other Major League Baseball teams. Of that we can be certain, even if the Mariners ought to have a slightly better record than they do. But the Mariners are playing against other Major League Baseball teams every single day, so how can you consider them failures? The Mariners' players are better than almost all of the other players in the entire world. They just happen to compete against many of the few who are better than them.

If that doesn't help you feel better about the Mariners then I'm sorry but I have nowhere else to go. Can't go much further than applauding the baseball players for being baseball players. I guess the next level would be applauding the players for having jobs. In this market? Shoot. Good for the Mariners. You don't want to be looking for a job in this market.

There was an alternate option for the first few paragraphs. I could try to save it for tomorrow or Sunday to save myself some thought exertion, but I'm coming out with it now instead because I am dreadfully impatient. For a while now we've been thinking that the Mariners have problems at home. In Seattle, they are 12-19, and they can't score runs. On the road, they are 18-23, and they can score runs. What people have assumed is that this must have something to do with Safeco, and its cavernous dimensions getting in the players' heads. But maybe it's not about Safeco at all.

Maybe it's about Mariners fans, and having to play in front of them. Maybe the Mariners don't like to win in front of Mariners fans for some reason. They struggle at home. They lost two of three in Arizona, and people kept saying how many Mariners hats and shirts they were seeing there. They lost tonight in San Diego, and one of my favorite things about going to Mariners games in San Diego was always how many Mariners fans came out to the ballpark. Maybe the Mariners can't stand support. Maybe the Mariners are trying to push us away. Maybe the Mariners are trying to break up with us?

The Mariners lost this game 9-5. There were 14 runs scored in baseball's most extreme pitcher-friendly environment. The Mariners slugged two home runs in the first two innings. Kevin Millwood had a 4-0 lead after two and a half. He gave it all back and then some, and to make matters worse, Clayton Richard helped his own cause with a perfect sac bunt, a two-run double, and an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, it was Richard who put the Padres in front 5-4. In the fifth inning, it was Richard who drove in a critical insurance run after the Mariners trimmed the deficit in the upper half. He wasn't getting lucky with fortunate batted-ball location - he smacked his double down the first-base line, and he hit his single hard and split the outfielders.

Clayton Richard wasn't the only Padres hitter to have a big game, but this game could've gone mighty different had Richard been held in check. I will remind you that Clayton Richard is a pitcher, and I will point out to you that, for his career before tonight, he'd batted .109 with a .272 OPS. The average NL pitcher this year has posted a .324 OPS, so Clayton Richard has been a below-average hitter, for a pitcher.

The Mariners have been punished by bad hitters before. The first one that comes to mind is Jeff Mathis, who was better against the Mariners than he was against seemingly anyone else during his time with the Angels. It was embarrassing when the Mariners got punished by Jeff Mathis. But at least Jeff Mathis is a position player, somebody who knows which end of the bat you're supposed to hold in your hands. Clayton Richard looks like he thinks you're supposed to eat the bat. That guy delivered big hits.

This guy delivered big hits.

Richard has a sample of at-bats going back to 2009, his first full season in the bigs. To get the best idea of what Clayton Richard is as a hitter, we should consider his entire sample. But as far as 2012's sample is concerned, before tonight Richard was 1-for-25 with 17 strikeouts. Before tonight, Richard was basically you if you played at least one year of baseball in high school. Two run-scoring hits, and against a veteran in Kevin Millwood. We can't even blame Richard's success on a young pitcher making mental mistakes. Millwood didn't have it, and he really didn't have it.

You know the worst part? When the game was over, I started going over Richard's hitting stats, and I watched the video highlights, and I started thinking "that swing's not so bad." I started thinking "those plate discipline numbers aren't as terrible as I thought they would be." I started thinking "Richard has a better contact rate for his career than Josh Hamilton has this season." I felt myself starting to make myself believe that it was okay for the Mariners to get hurt by Clayton Richard. Not from the mound, but at the plate. I had to put my own foot down. "No, self," I told myself, "you cannot rationalize this. You cannot sell Clayton Richard as a guy who should get hits. You are too positive. Recognize and acknowledge the darkness in the world."

If you do want something to be positive about, since the Mariners lost, Kevin Millwood was bad, and Kyle Seager committed two errors, Charlie Furbush was great again over two innings of relief. Oliver Perez threw more strikes and wasn't as bad as two hits and a run. Miguel Olivo drew his first walk since April 27th and also yanked a home run down the left-field line. Ichiro finished with three hits, and reached base a fourth time when his speed forced an error. These are things to not be negative about.

But the big positive is Franklin Gutierrez. I have fond memories of Gutierrez blasting dingers in Petco, and tonight he blasted another, in the top of the first inning. Richard threw him a low 1-and-1 changeup and Gutierrez powered it out to left-center. So, there, Guti already has more home runs in 2012 than he had in 2011. Guti has more home runs in his last two games than he had in 2011. In 2011, he batted almost 350 times. Maybe you don't really count home runs in Chase Field, since everybody hits home runs in Chase Field. You count home runs in Petco Park. Especially home runs that clear a power alley.

Beyond the homer, Gutierrez singled three times. He was supposed to come back from his rehab assignment a little rusty, but instead he's batting .308 with power, and while one shouldn't read into those numbers, those aren't numbers that suggest rust. Franklin Gutierrez might be clicking, and where at some points it looked like he might have another lost season, it's still June. There's a lot of time left for Guti to play, and there's a lot of time left for Guti to re-establish himself as one of the better all-around center fielders in baseball. I'm not saying he's going to do that, but the early signs are positive. We got excited about his recovered strength, and already he's demonstrating that he's better.

Tomorrow Felix Hernandez opposes Jason Marquis. That is a mismatch of breathtaking proportions. The problem is that the rest of the Mariners oppose the rest of the Padres, too, and that might just even things out. Just because Felix is way better than Marquis doesn't necessarily mean it'll look that way tomorrow night. That's why you watch! For the surprises!
